Bernard Patrick Maloy Graduate Student Research Award
Given annually to the graduate student who submits the best research paper to the Honors and Awards Committee. Award winners are encouraged to work towards future publication in Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport.
This Graduate Student Research Award is granted to a graduate (MS, PhD, or Law) student
submitting the most outstanding research paper based upon the criteria below. The winner will receive free Conference Registration and reimbursement up to $500 in expenses to attend the annual SRLA Conference. The winning paper and the selected student will be included in the Conference Program to present his/her paper, as well as recognized during the SRLA Awards Banquet.
Application Criteria:
1. Students must submit a research paper or case note that deals with a significant and novel legal issue related to sport or physical activity.
2. The paper must be written in either APA or Blue Book style (follow current editions).
3. The suggested length for the paper is 10-20 double-spaced pages (not counting Appendices and Endnotes). Applicants must use the Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
4. The applicant must send the paper as a Microsoft Word document to brian.menaker@tamuk.edu before 11:59 p.m. December 16, 2022. Late submissions will not be considered. In the email message accompanying the attached paper, include the student author’s name, mailing address, email address, and telephone numbers. (An email will be sent to the applicant to confirm that the paper has been received.)
5. The paper and associated research must be the sole work of the applicant, and edited
and approved by a faculty advisor.
6. The applicant must be a graduate student (MS, PhD, or Law), and must be majoring in
sport/recreation/physical activity, sport/recreation management, law, or a related subject area. Either the student applicant or faculty advisor must be a current member of SRLA at the time of submission.
7. The faculty advisor must submit a signed document verifying compliance with criteria 5 and 6.
8. A maximum of three (3) student papers may be submitted from one academic institution.
Criteria for Selection:
1. Relevance, novelty, and importance of the topic to the legal aspects of sport and physical
activity. Topic of the paper must address a legal issue.
2. Quality and thoroughness of research; appropriateness of resources; use of primary resources.
3. Quality of writing, editing, organization and logic of thoughts, grammar, and citation style.
4. Adherence to all of the application criteria identified above. Verification documents (see
criteria #7 above) must be emailed to brian.menaker@tamuk.edu. This award is not automatic –submissions must be of adequate quality, as determined by the Honors & Awards Committee. The winner of the award will be notified via e-mail in January. All questions should be directed to:

Undergraduate Student Research Competition
The Undergraduate Student Research Competition allows undergraduate students an opportunity to submit and present research for evaluation by a panel of judges from the SRLA professional membership. Students will submit an abstract via email to Honors and Awards Chair Dr. Brian Menaker using the current conference submission criteria.
- The deadline for undergraduate abstract submissions is December 16, 2022.
- Abstracts will undergo a blind review and accepted submissions will be determined by January 15.
- Presentations will be 10 minutes in length; accepted presentations will be conducted via Zoom.
- The winning presentation will be determined based on a composite score of the abstract and presentation at the conference.
- All student participants will receive a small SRLA memento for participating in the competition.
Mary Myers Travel Scholarship
Students who are actively involved in the 2023 SRLA Conference by either presenting research, participating in the Undergraduate Student Research Competition or competing in the Case Study Competition, are invited to apply for a Mary Myers Travel Scholarship award. Students must submit a letter via email to Honors and Awards Chair Dr, Brian Menaker providing the following information: (1) How funding from the Mary Myers Travel Scholarship award would facilitate their travel to and participation in the conference; (2) A discussion of their expected participation in and contribution to the conference; and (3) A description of their financial need. The deadline is January 11, 2023.
