SRLA  Membership Benefits:

  • Sports Litigation Alert-Complimentary access to the industry’s only bi-weekly newsletter devoted exclusively to the sports law field. Sports Litigation Alert tracks legal developments as they occur in amateur and professional athletics as well as legislative issues that impact sports law professionals. SRLA members will receive a pdf copy of this newsletter via email.
  • Annual Conference – SRLA members receive discounted registration to the annual SRLA conference. Our conference provides the unique opportunity to network, present, discuss, and learn about the law and how it relates to sport and recreation.
  • Awards – At the annual conference, SRLA distinguishes professional and student members with the Betty van der Smissen Leadership Award, the Herb Appenzeller SRLA Honor Award, the Lori K. Miller SRLA Young Professional Award, and Student Research Awards.
  • SRLA Research Fellow Designation– SRLA recognizes scholars by honoring their achievement in legal aspects of sport and recreation-related scholarship. The SRLA Research Fellow designation is one of distinction within SRLA and Fellows’ own academic communities, and encourages high standards of research and other forms of scholarship among SRLA members.
  • Expert Witness Listing – SRLA maintains a listing of members that are willing to serve expert witnesses; members are eligible to be included on this list. The Expert Witness List gives members an opportunity to receive national exposure in their area of expertise.

Membership is open to all persons whether residing within or outside the United States. The SRLA bylaws define two classes of professional members. The designation of these classes, qualifications, dues, and rights of the members of such classes is as follows:

•Professional ($125) – Professional membership is open to college and university faculty and staff, and persons not employed in higher education who have responsibilities or interests related to the area of sport law, sport management, recreation law, recreation management, risk management, facility management, athletic administration, physical education, sport tourism, leisure services, or other similar areas.

•Emeritus ($55) – If a professional member retires from the institution with which she/he has been affiliated (according to the rules and regulations of the institution) and at the time of retirement has been a member of this corporation (or its predecessor) for the five consecutive preceding years, she/he is eligible for emeritus membership and such membership shall be extended to her/him upon request and shall continue indefinitely, provided only that the member pays the dues for emeritus members as set forth in Article XI of the By-Laws.

Student members play an important role in SRLA; students represent the future of the organization.  Student members enjoy opportunies for professional networking, academic collaboration, and socialization with students studying sport and recreation law.

Student membership ($50) is open to graduate and undergraduate students who are studying in or have an interest in the area of sport law, sport management, recreation law, recreation management, risk management, facility management, athletic administration, physical education, sport tourism, leisure services, or other similar areas; and who are enrolled as a full-time student as defined by their educational institution.
